Drawing of a Boat is a replica, constructed by frottage printing the surface of a boat, and then reconstructing a substructure to give shape and structure to fit the resulting “drawn” two dimensional image. Playing with the ways we interpret negative space, information loss, and the tricky nature of the copy; this project probes the idea of preservation, and asks whether its possible to accurately replicate or recreate an object or material practice within a new context.
This boat used for this piece is, in fact, a replica itself of an earlier Sørdalen geitbåt. It was constructed using a UNESCO protected, historical Norwegian hand building technique and without the aid of modern tools. This “original boat” made for Kystlaget Trondhjem, was generously loaned to me to create this sculptural reinterpretation, and the work would not have been possible without the members of Kystelaget Trondheim’s help and enthusiasm for the project.
