Drawing of a Boat is a replica, constructed by frottage printing the surface of a boat, and then reconstructing a substructure to give shape and structure to fit the resulting “drawn” two dimensional image. Playing with the ways we interpret negative space, information loss, and the tricky nature of the copy; this project probes the idea of preservation, and asks whether its possible to accurately replicate or recreate an object or material practice within a new context.
This boat used for this piece is itself, a replica of a Sørdalen geitbåt from the middle ages. It was constructed using a UNESCO protected, Norwegian hand building method and without the aid of modern tools.
